A judge decided this Wednesday to open trial against five of the six accused by the Prosecutor’s Office in the case of the murder of former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencioabout which the main hypothesis of the crime falls on a faction of the criminal group Los Lobos.
Judge Irene Pérez has dismissed the case “due to lack of evidence” Oscar Andrés Fierro Floreswhom the Prosecutor’s Office had accused as an accomplice, for allegedly having met at the Villavicencio rally at Ándersson School, in the north of Quito, on the afternoon of August 9, 2023, with the mission of, together with Alexandra Elizabeth Chimbo Farinangoinform the assassins of the presidential candidate’s movements.
But in the process it has been determined that the Prosecutor’s Office accuses Fierro not because it has evidence of his presence at the rally, but because the telephone number used by Alexandra Elizabeth Chimbo Farinango, who has been proven to be in the place, was in the name of Fierro.. “It has not been determined why (the phone line) is in someone else’s name. No other element of participation is verified,” said the judge.
The judge has ordered his immediate release.
The Invisible and the Skinny
The main of the five defendants against whom the trial will be held are Carlos Edwin Angulo Laraalias ‘The invisible’noted as the mediate author the crime, for having allegedly given the order to kill Villavicencioin a chat message to the man who fired the shots, the Colombian Johan Castillo López.
Angulo is identified by Ecuadorian authorities as the leader of The Invisiblesa faction of Los Lobos.

The other gunmen were arrested the same day of the crime and ended up murdered weeks later under preventive detention.
