One of Mel Gibson’s best films appears in the elegant Mediabook

When it comes to director Mel Gibson, most people probably think of Braveheart or The Passion of the Christ. One of the Lethal Weapon star’s best films is often underestimated. The brutal historical epic Apocalypto doesn’t take the story very seriously, but it does tell one exciting survival struggle in the jungle with plenty of action, drama and surprises. Gibson doesn’t skimp on blood either, which earned Apocalypto an 18+ rating.

Epic 18+ Action: What’s Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto About?

The Yucatán Peninsula around 1500: A small group of Maya lives peacefully and harmoniously as a village community in the depths of the jungle. Jaguar hunter Paw (Rudy Youngblood) lives there with his heavily pregnant wife Seven (Dalia Hernandez) and son.

But one day the village community is ambushed and attacked. Jaguar’s paw hides his wife and son in a hole in time, but he is captured. The attackers not only want to enslave the prisoners, but also for them ritual purposes to use. When it is the turn of the jaguar’s paw to be sacrificed on the steps of the Mayan pyramid, he manages to escape. A race against time begins because his wife and son are in great danger.

Incidentally, after The Passion of the Christ, which was filmed in Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew, Mel Gibson went one step further. In Apocalypto not only Mayathan is spoken throughout. Gibson also completely dispensed with well-known movie stars. This benefits the unpredictability of events and the suspense.
