The return of a master who is synonymous with pure cinema, Francis Ford Coppola, is getting closer. With as much expectation as controversy, the release of Megalopolis is approaching, which could be a disaster or the umpteenth vindication of a genius of the seventh art, who has been delivering extraordinary films throughout the decades.
If we had to pick out one of the less obvious ones, other than The Godfather or Apocalypse Now, there would be no better candidate to watch than The Outsiders. A sensational youth drama with very classic touches starring Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke and Diane Lane that can be found streaming through Filmin.
Rusty James is an up-and-coming street thug who regrets not having lived through the golden age of street gangs, when his older brother, Motorcycle Boy, was king of the city. Just before he disappeared for two months, Motorcycle Boy made a peace treaty that ended the gang wars, but Rusty ends it by getting into a fight with Biff Wilcox from which he does not come out very well.

That’s when his brother returns to the streets, even more enigmatic and silent than before, completely disinterested in his illustrious past in the neighborhood. Over the next few days, Rusty’s life seems to fall apart and the future looks bleaker than ever, unless his brother manages to teach him to control his inner demons and live outside of people’s expectations.
Following the spectacular failure of his venture to set up a different film studio in Hollywood, Coppola had to revive his career through youth stories, adapting two novels by S.E. Hinton. He shot both projects back to back, The Outsiders and this one, keeping part of the cast but completely changing the approach.
‘The Law of the Street’: Noir Rebellion
This exploration of rebellion and juvenile delinquency has other nuances here due to the aesthetics and tone of film noir that Coppola decides to apply, also applying influences from European cinema that he saw while he was being educated in cinema. This gives The Outsiders a unique character, far removed from the conventions of American cinema.
“The best job I’ve ever had the privilege of presiding over”: The most anticipated sci-fi film is now ready
It feels special and different within Coppola’s style and filmography, who achieves dazzling, experimental work that is very empathetic to these young characters. The film has already enjoyed good reviews and is considered a cult gem, but it is never a bad time to claim it as one of the director’s essential films.
