One more former player Tottenham Hotspur who won a trophy after leaving that club. This time Kieran Trippier who do it on Atletico Madrid.
The 30-year-old defender has joined Atletico since the summer of 2019 and is immediately an option in the first team. His ability to comb the right wing and release dead ball executions is the reason.
Indeed, Trippier hasn’t scored a goal in his two seasons at Atletico, but his role is so central in Atletico’s game. He made six assists in the league this season while advancing Los Colchoneros to win the Spanish League in the last week, Saturday (22/5/2021) yesterday night.
Trippier became the fourth English player to win the Spanish League after Laurie Cunnignham (1980), Steve McManaman (2001 and 2003), and David Beckham (2007). All of them were with Real Madrid, so Trippier was the first at another club.
For Kieran Trippier this is the first trophy in his professional career since 2009. Trippier has indeed played at Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur for a long time, but at most he is only runner-up in the 2018/2019 Champions League.
The trophy for the Spanish league champions Atletico adds to the sad story Tottenham Hotspur only. Because, there are more former Lilywhites players who have managed to become champions after playing at their new club.
Kieran Trippier became the 28th player to win the trophy after Tottenham last won the 2008 Premier League Cup trophy. The most successful was of course in Spain when Luka Modric and Gareth Bale won four Champions League trophies and two Spanish Leagues.
