One minor dead and others injured in shooting in Finland – 2024-04-09 06:55:37

One of the three minors who were injured this Tuesday in a shooting that occurred at a primary school in Vantaa (sure of Finland) has died and the other two are hospitalized in serious condition, according to a statement from the Finnish Police.

The three victims are twelve years old and were companions of the shooter, who is the same age and was detained by the Police when he fled the scene of the incident carrying a gun.

As explained by the Police, the perpetrator of the shots has confessed his responsibility and did not offer resistance when he was arrested.

The shooting occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time (6:00 GMT) at the school in Viertolaa few kilometers from the airport Helsinki-Vantaaa school where nearly 800 students between seven and sixteen years old study and 90 employees work.

The authorities sent a dozen police cars and ambulances to the scene and alerted citizens to avoid traveling through the school area and not leave their homes until further notice, according to local media.

The Police also detailed that one of the victims died at the same place as the shooting, while the two injured were urgently taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Suspect arrested

Shortly after 10:00 local time (7:00 GMT), the Police announced that they had arrested the suspect in the shooting, who apparently is a student at that school between twelve and thirteen years old.

A police spokesperson explained in a press conference that the gun with which the crime was committed belonged to a close relative of the perpetrator of the shooting and had the relevant license.

Investigators have not found any indication that the detainee had planned the attack, although at the moment they do not know the motive.

In the last two decades there have been Finland several indiscriminate shootings with firearms that have caused dozens of victims, including two massacres in two educational centers perpetrated by two young people who killed a total of 18 people before committing suicide. EFE
