William Baldwin to Dir.bg: Cinema is my passion, but political goals are more important to me

The Spanish 140-minute drama “One Love” won the Grand Prize for Masterful Literary Adaptation in the Cinelibri Feature Film Competition. The jury’s favorite was announced by its chairman, William Baldwin.

Directed by Isabelle Coixet, who also wrote the screenplay along with Laura Ferrero and Sara Mesa. Starring: Laia Costa, Ingrid García Jonsson, Hugo Silva, Luis Bermejo, Francesco Carril.

The award was accepted at a ceremony on Friday evening, in hall 1 of the NDK, by the Spanish ambassador to our country, Alejandro Polanco Mata. He thanked for the wonderful organization of the festival and the jury. “For us, this award represents something extremely important. We, all Spaniards here, are extremely happy and this is an honor for us,” said the ambassador.

THE HISTORY

Escaping the stressful city life, 30-year-old Nat hides in the small village of La Escapa, in the deepest Spanish countryside. In a dilapidated country house, in the company of a stray dog, the young woman will try to get her life back on track.

After dealing with the hostility of his landlord and the distrust of the locals, Nat is faced with a disturbing offer from his neighbor Andreas. This strange encounter will spark a passion that will completely consume Nat and make her question her true self.

“One Love” is a striking account of existential doubts and the transformative power of carnal desire, of the subversive nature of gender roles and the beliefs associated with them. Under the pressure of passion, the main character will seek answers to a number of questions and rethink her life,” the critic wrote. The film, created this year, has a nomination for the best film at the San Sebastian Film Festival (2023).

DOCUMENTARY CINEMA

This year, for the second time, “Cinelibre” had a competition for the best documentary film. The award goes to Wim Wenders’ Anselm (2023), nominated for the Cannes Film Festival’s Golden Eye Award (2023). The film is dedicated to Anselm Kiefer, one of the greatest contemporary painters and sculptors.

“There’s no way to describe him. He doesn’t allow for interpretations… He’s a man who’s not afraid to draw anything. He can draw the universe, he can draw mathematical formulas, he can draw history, he can draw myths, biology, alchemy . He is not afraid of any human knowledge, he can turn anything into a painting or a sculpture,” says Wim Wenders about his film. He is also the screenwriter of the tape starring Anselm Kiefer, Daniel Kiefer, Anton Wenders.

THE CEREMONY

In addition to William Baldwin, the other members of the jury were also present at the award ceremony – the Canadian casting director and producer Bruno Rosato, the French film director and actress Lea Todorov – daughter of the world-famous philosopher, literary critic, semiotician and culturologist Tsvetan Todorov, the Spanish television and film actress Carla Nieto, and theater and film actor Ivan Burnev.

“This is the second or third time in my career that I have been invited to participate in a jury. It is an extraordinary privilege for me. I want to emphasize the level of excellent work that I see at the festival, as well as the excellent level of the films that we saw. I can I dare say four or five of them could have been in first place,” said William Baldwin.

The evening ended with a screening of the movie “The Palace” by Roman Polanski. With the farcical black comedy “Cinelibre” honors the 90th anniversary of the Polish-French film director, actor, screenwriter and producer of Jewish origin.
