According to the White Paper on the prevention of karôshi (death from overwork at work), released by the Japanese Ministry of Health on October 11, approximately one in three workers in the arts and entertainment industry were forced to stay at their workplace for at least 60 hours per week . This figure is the threshold which marks the “red line of overwork”, beyond which the lives of workers are in danger.
The proportion of these workers was 35.2%. Although a simple comparison is not possible, the proportion of employees in all industries whose actual working hours were 60 hours or more per week was not only 5.5%.
The government conducted the survey between October and December last year among 488 people working in the arts and entertainment sector, including directors, technical staff and editors.
Among them, 42.0% said they had been hurt by comments made against them by colleagues or others. People who said they had been hit, kicked or yelled at by people related to work was 22.3%.
The study also indicates that 51% of respondents were not informed of the amount of their salary before accepting a job offer.
