One in three trees is threatened with extinction

Globally, with the exception of oak, maple and ebony, the magnolia and marandi species are the most threatened.

The situation in Europe is not too bad, according to the report. Less than 58 percent of wild tree species are threatened with extinction.

In Central Africa, the situation is even worse. Meise Botanical Gardens researchers, together with a team of about 20 international researchers, have studied the status of restricted tree species in their distribution to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. Of the approximately 347 tree species, 226 or 65 percent were found to be endangered. Of these, 42 – 12 percent – ​​are threatened with extinction and of those 42 species, 24 are already extinct, accounting for almost 7 percent of the total species.

Tree species are critically endangered elsewhere. More than 440 tree species are on the brink of extinction, according to the report, with fewer than 50 in the wild.
