One in ten with payment problems relapses quickly | Money

Within six months of solving the financial problem, 6.8% will run into problems again, according to the annual debt monitor of the BKR foundation. After one year this is 9.1% and after five years 13%, or about one in eight. The vast majority, 87%, have learned their lesson and will not run into financial problems again.

Thanks to the negative registrations at the BKR, it is also very difficult and expensive for people who once had a payment problem to take out new credit, such as a mortgage or a contract for a lease car, in the following five years.

Payment problems

Payment problems that are registered are, for example, a arrears on a current loan, making a repayment arrangement, claiming the loan or the remainder thereof, writing off €250 or more or making a debt settlement.

In 2021, the number of registered payment problems decreased. The number of people in arrears with their mortgage decreased by 17.5% in 2021. The number of people with a debt settlement also decreased.

The more loans someone takes out, the greater the chance of problems, according to the annual overview. With one credit, that chance is 0.6%. Whoever has four credits has a 2.25% chance of getting into trouble and with five contracts the chance is almost 3%.
