Expectant mothers should shine with happiness every moment. However, a study carried out in the UK shows that a quarter of pregnant women face mental health problems during pregnancy.
The study conducted by researchers at King’s College London took part of 545 pregnant women, consulted in the prenatal period between November 2014 and June 2016.
During the examination, the specialized staff asked the women two specific questions about their mental state. According to the results, one in four pregnant women who participated in the research had mental health problems.
Specifically, 11% of women in the study had depression, 15% had anxiety, 2% had eating disorders, and another 2% had obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many pregnant women also suffered from a combination of some of these conditions.
The authors of the study claim that it is absolutely necessary to include a psychological assessment in the package to assess the health of the pregnant woman of a psychological assessment. It is very important that this is done because “mental disorders during pregnancy are associated with negative effects on women, pregnancy, fetus, baby, child and adolescent,” the study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.
“In clinical practice, healthcare professionals need to identify the mental health problems a pregnant woman may face, not just the mood disorders that until recently were the main concern. Women should be asked about their emotional state by a healthcare professional who show objectivity and support during all contacts during pregnancy and after birth, “said Louise Howard, the study’s coordinator.
