“One in five Germans: too much attention for Holocaust” | Abroad

Of the respondents, 22 percent believe that the commemoration of the Holocaust takes up too much space compared to other subjects. On the other hand, 24 percent also think that the commemoration should be extended. 45 percent believe that the way they are handled is just right.

Vice-President Eva Högl of the parliamentary group of the Social-Democratic SPD is concerned about the figures. Germany has a “historical responsibility” to commemorate the “cruel acts of the Germans” during the Holocaust, she said. Stephan Thomae, member of the liberal FPD, warned: “The memory of the Holocaust is important, the murder of millions of Jews must not be forgotten.”

Monday marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp by the Russians. At least 1.1 million people were killed, especially Jews.
