One in 10 claims for insurance compensation is an attempted fraud

Although they are sentenced to prison, even for a few months, fraud and scams to insurance companies with regard to vehicles is a habit that although it does not stand out for accumulating an excessive total of crimes, it does maintain a constant that annually affects not only companies but also those possibly involved in an accident or traffic incident.

In the celebration of the day of the Fight against insurance fraud, the Cooperative Investigation between Insurance Entities (ICEA) has released the results of its annual study in relation to the past 2021 and, in summary, It is estimated that 9 out of 100 traffic accidents with bodily harm cover up some type of fraud for insurance companies. Likewise, 6 out of every 100 reports of vehicle theft are false and 2.22% of material damage to vehicles is fraudulent.

The areas in which more fraud or attempted scams are detected are in the automobile and in civil liability insurance. ICEA data shows how 66% of the cases of fraud investigated occur in the automobile insurance sector, partly due to the obligation that all drivers are required to have one and therefore has a large social presence.

Concealment of damages and disproportionate claims

By type of fraud, in the automobile insurance sector it is very common the concealment of pre-existing damage, which occurred in 39% of the frauds analyzed. Disproportionate claims follow in importance, in 23% of cases, and in multi-risk insurance it is common to find simulated claims.

11% of the amounts requested from insurers for the theft of a vehicle could have some fraudulent component and, in the same way, there is usually an attempt to deceive behind the claim of 10% of compensation for injuries in traffic accidents. And although only 1.76% of the mishaps caused by civil liability policies hide fraud, the weight of the undue claims on the total is much higher, specifically, 10%.

As far as the amounts and costs of these frauds are concerned, a third of the deception attempts investigated last year involved claims of less than 500 euros. The remaining two thirds involved the payment of higher amounts.
