One has to get off the bike. OxygenOS and ColorOS merge into one system

Although both the Oppo and OnePlus brands belong to the Chinese conglomerate BBK Electronic, until recently they operated as two separate entities that borrowed selected technologies to each other to the maximum. At the beginning of last year, however, greater convergence began; first happened merger of development centers, two weeks ago announced the next phase of the merger, which also includes the promotion of OnePlus founder Pete Lau to the position of product manager of both brands.

What activities the second wave of mergers should cover was not announced, only the benefits of faster and more stable software updates were highlighted in the press release. This is one of the differences between the phones of both brands – OnePlus smartphones are powered by the OxygenOS system (HydrogenOS in China), Oppo phones run on the ColorOS platform. But this situation will not apply for a long time.

OxygenOS and Color OS merge into one system

OnePlus recently leaked an employee manual that answered some questions about merging with Oppo. It was surprisingly forbidden to comment on issues related to the OxygenOS and ColorOS operating systems at the very beginning of this material. It was obvious that there was a problem ahead of us in the field of software, which was confirmed this week.

OnePlus announced in its discussion forum that the OxygenOS and ColorOS systems are awaiting merging, at least in the area of the basic code. It is said that users should not notice any changes, they will probably take place in the background at an early stage. OnePlus will probably use a large part of OxygenOS, as according to the published article it realizes that it is one of the most popular extensions of Android ever. OxygenOS will remain on OnePlus phones, only to be built on a stronger and more stable platform, whatever that means.

Longer support for future and current phones

We will find out what the “new” OxygenOS will look like this autumn with the release of Android 12. Older OnePlus phones can also look forward to a new experience, as it will be available in the form of an update. Most importantly, select OnePlus smartphones can also enjoy extended software support:

  • Flagship models will now receive 3 years of system updates and 4 years of security updates; this practice will be implemented from the OnePlus 8 model and its successors (including the T and R series)
  • Nord-class mid-range phones receive 2 years of system updates and 3 years of security updates; this applies to the Nord and Nord CE models
  • Basic models from the Nord N family will receive only one major system upgrade and 3 years of security patches; this applies to the N10, N100 and N200 models

We praise the extension of OnePlus support, although we can imagine it even longer with low-end models.
