One-fifth of employees missed a call, pretending to update devices – Technology, science

On May 25, 2021, 21% of employees confirmed that they had pretended to be installing updates on their devices in order not to attend a call or meeting. This justification is plausible, as software updates can interfere with work – a third (35%) of employees say that an update has caused a call miss. This is stated in a recent study commissioned by Kaspersky, which examined employees’ attitudes and habits regarding updates.

Frequent appointments are sometimes perceived as one of the the most unpleasant phenomena office everyday. Switching to telecommuting and virtual communication has not solved the problem because video calls are tiring and at the end of the day, people feel even more tired. A recent study by Kaspersky shows that some employees have found an excuse to miss some calls – they pretend that the update does not allow the use of work devices.

Colleagues may believe the excuse, as they may have encountered the need to update the device themselves. In addition to missed meetings, 37% of employees have lost some unsaved work or data when the PC or laptop restarts after installing updates.

In general, employees tend to consider this downtime as an opportunity to procrastinate – 27% of respondents admit that they have installed updates to deliberately waste working time. However, most employees do not like to be interrupted, so 65% want the update to take place outside working hours and to continue to work productively.

“Updates are usually downloaded in silent mode during operation and do not affect performance, but you must restart your device for them to take effect. Of course, some work issues cannot be postponed, so usually the user has the option to restart the device within a certain period of time. As we can see, some either miss such announcements or do not want to do so, so a mandatory restart may occur at the most inopportune moment – just before an important call or while writing a long e-mail, ”comments Yegor Harchenko, Head of IT Services and Assets at Kaspersky .

To make the update convenient for both employees and IT administrators, Kaspersky recommends that IT departments do the following.

1. Schedule an update closer to the end of the workday when the devices are still on and you can download the necessary updates, but employee activity is generally lower.

2. If possible, use remote activation. This technology allows you to turn on workstations over a network so that updates can be downloaded outside of business hours.

3. Divide users into several groups, including the test group. Update them one by one so that the IT department can help everyone in time in case of a failure.

4. Inform staff about the auto-save feature available in some office productivity software – it will automatically save any changes.

5. Install the terminal protection solution with patch management tools. In addition, behavioral detection and monk prevention technologies prevent criminals from exploiting unstoppable security concerns.

About the survey

In April 2021, Kaspersky commissioned Savanta to conduct an online survey of 15,000 respondents to investigate device update trends. The sample consisted of 1000 respondents from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, as well as 500 respondents from the United States, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Romania, the UAE, Turkey, South Africa, China, India, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru and Russia.
