One Dead, Several Injured – NBC Los Angeles

At least one person was killed and nearly two dozen were injured, five seriously, when a bus traveling from New York City to Philadelphia overturned in an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike, according to state police.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday in Woodbridge Township, on the southbound entrance ramp to the Thomas Edison service area, New Jersey State Police said. The double-decker bus was on its way from New York to Philadelphia when it collided with a Ford F-150 pickup truck, according to authorities. The circumstances were still under investigation.

“I have a bus overturned on its side, I have people leaving right now,” could be heard in the Broadcastify audio.

The double-decker bus, which appeared to be a Megabus, was said to be heading from New York with about 20 passengers on board.

One person was killed and there were multiple injuries, police confirmed, with about 20 people injured. At least five suffered serious injuries, including the bus driver.

Two of those injured in the crash were airlifted to hospital.

It was unclear what may have caused the bus crash and an investigation was underway. As a result, the bus lay on its side, with those inside having to climb out through windows or a hatch in the roof, while firefighters were seen trying to cut through metal parts and rescue others who might have been inside.

Outside lanes near the incident were still closed at 8:30 p.m. However, the road was cleared at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday after the bus was towed away.
