One Dead, One Injured – NBC 7 Houston

One person was killed and four people were injured in a shooting that broke out at a music festival in Mississippi on Saturday night.

Gunfire erupted just before 10 pm at the Mississippi Mudbug Festival in Jackson. At least five shots were exchanged between two or three people.

A Hinds County sheriff’s deputy also fired his weapon, apparently killing one of those involved in the shooting, Sheriff Tyree Jones said at a news conference.

Three of the injured are hospitalized in hospital. So far the identity of the fatal victim and the officer involved is unknown.

Authorities recovered a rifle, a pistol and rounds of different calibers at the scene.

Two people, described as minors, were detained for questioning. They are believed to have been involved in the shooting or have information about it.

Jones said there was an exchange of gunfire and at least one of those involved fired into the crowd during the Wednesday-Sunday music festival, which celebrates peak lobster season and includes musical acts.

The annual event is hosted by the state of Mississippi. Jones said multiple law enforcement agencies were on the scene before the shooting took place.
