A small plane crashed on the A58 at the Sint-Willebrord exit just after half past twelve on Wednesday afternoon. The pilot was killed in the crash. There is a lot of debris on the road on the motorway from Breda in the direction of Bergen op Zoom. The A58 is expected to remain closed in both directions for the rest of the evening.
The plane caught fire after the crash. The smoke plume was visible from a wide area. Around a quarter past one, no more smoke was visible. The highway is still littered with debris. Traces of the crash can also be seen in the verge next to the road.
The pilot was the only one on board the plane. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. It is still unclear what caused the plane to crash, the Safety Region reports. Many emergency services are on site.
Flight school
The plane belongs to Vliegschool Breda Aviation. The company reported this a few hours after the accident in which the pilot died. Shortly after the accident, the flight school said it could not confirm this yet.

Two aviation investigators are going to the crash site to investigate. This was reported by the Dutch Safety Board. The Safety Board is called out to serious accidents or other incidents and carries out the initial technical investigation on site.
Eyewitness
An eyewitness saw the plane crash before his eyes. “I think we were 150 meters away,” he said on Omroep Brabant radio on Wednesday afternoon. “I suddenly saw something coming down from the bus. That was the plane. The moment it went down, we saw a fireball and it was over.”
