A man died today off the coast of Gijón at overturn the pleasure boat in which he was traveling with another crew member who suffered several bruises, but that he managed to swim to the coast at 7:30 p.m. today, sources from the Civil Guard have reported.
The deceased was rescued still alive by members of the Civil Guard, Gijón Firefighters and the Red Cross who transferred him to the port of The Musel, where he underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation practices that were unsuccessful.
His companion, a man in his 60s, had severe bruises and was in a state of shock at the time of being rescued by a jet ski and was transferred in a mobile ICU to the Cabueñes Hospital, according to municipal sources.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident was recorded in the bay of Gijón, in the area near the statue of ‘The Emigrant’s Mother’, when a sea surge caused this small wooden boat to overturn, which was destroyed.
The Organic Unit of the Gijón Judicial Police has taken charge of the proceedings and the investigation of an event that also mobilized members of Maritime Rescue.
Minutes before the sinking of a fishing boat took place near the coast of Llanes with four crew members who managed to swim to shore.
The sailors, who were treated on site by the emergency services and are in good condition, have indicated that the sinking occurred after a failure in the navigation system and not noticing the presence of rocks against which collided.
