The fast-moving blaze comes after a historic heatwave brought extreme conditions to the Northwestern United States and Western Canada. There are currently 99 active fires in British Columbia, according to the BC Wildfire Dashboard, with 76 burning in the past two days.
DriveBC, which provides information on driving conditions in the province, reported that two wildfires had closed highways north and south of Lytton.
At a joint news conference, British Columbia’s Secretary of Public Security and Attorney General Mike Farnworth said the fire destroyed most of the houses and buildings in Lytton. Meanwhile, some residents have not been found.
Farnworth called the fire a disaster for the Lytton community and said he might issue a state of emergency, depending on how the fire season continues.
