El Clásico Real Madrid and Barcelona greatly expand their geographical reach
The whole world of football awaits the summit of the ninth round of the Spanish league between Real Madrid and their host Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu, but this season’s Clasico will be different in India, a country of one billion and 400 million inhabitants.
Fans in India followed the Clasico broadcast on English-language screens, but the notable development this season is the broadcast of the big match between Real and Barca in Hindi, spoken by nearly 530 million people in India, along with Bengali, spoken by 66 million native speakers and Malayalam, spoken by 30 million people.
This move is the result of the League’s agreement last year with Indian company Viacom18 to broadcast El Clasico in the Asian country, and has already attracted followers despite its English broadcast.
Through this step, the League aims to bet on exploiting the untapped potential of the Indian market, as well as increasing the popularity of the Spanish League to take advantage of it at all levels.
The association will organize an event for Radio El Clasico in Hindi in Mumbai, which is expected to attend 3,000 people and will see the presence of former Barcelona star Patrick Kluivert, and another, but smaller event, will be organized by MTV for El Radio. Clasico a Goa in English.
La Liga commissioner in India, Jose Antonio Cachata, expressed his great happiness at this step and described it by saying: “It’s time to make some noise”.
“It would be a mistake to just focus on El Clásico and do nothing for the rest of the year. Our job is to make La Liga noise permanent, stay in touch with fans and broadcasters and offer minor events to sponsors.”
Interestingly, Barcelona and Real Madrid lead the Spanish standings with 22 points each, and neither have lost yet.
