Owen believes Ronaldo would have broken all records had he moved under current market conditions, with the former England international believing that even “£500 million” would have been cheap for CR7.
In an interview with Genting Casino Owen said: “If you look at the current transfer record of over 200 million, you have to say that Cristiano Ronaldo was worth more at Manchester United. In hindsight, what he gives us is the number of Champions League titles he will win single-handedly, the number of shirts, advertising and merchandise he will sell around the world.”
Owen continued: “In hindsight, I think 500 million would be cheap. You could even double that when you look at the goals, the trophies, the shirts and how much the clubs benefitted when he was there. How he built their brand, how he won trophies and brought them all that money. If you had told them at that point how much he would give them for nine seasons, they might have said a billion euros, but not 80 million. £500 million would be cheap.”
