Ondřej Höppner, the “founder of the Czech boulevard”, died

Ondřej Höppner, a journalist, editor-in-chief and founder and designer of Czech newspapers and magazines, especially those with a tabloid focus, died. His wife Monika Höppner Zaťková announced this on Facebook on Friday evening. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Höppner was considered an expert on tabloid media. In 1998, for example, he became the deputy editor-in-chief of Večerník Praha, followed by the tabloid weekly Spy, a daily with tabloid content Aha! or another tabloid newspaper Šíp.

In addition, Höppner also founded the local Malostranské noviny, Staroměstské noviny and StaroBrněnské noviny.

From 2008 he collaborated with the Blesk.cz portal and from spring 2012 to December 2013 he was the editor-in-chief of the weekly Nedělní Blesk published by Ringier.

In May 2013, he joined Our Media, for which he co-founded the online magazine Protiproud by Petr Hájek, a former adviser to President Václav Klaus.

Höppner is also the author of several books: The Murder in Egypt on the Case of Petr Kramný or The Confession of the Boulevard Hyena.

He participated in or provided in his media media space for the campaigns of various political entities, eg within the Senate campaign of Martin Bursík (LES). Together with Jan Čížek, he created the election newspaper Na vlastní oči for the SPD movement for the 2017 parliamentary elections and the 2018 municipal elections.

Since 2019, he has operated the Hoppner.cz website, where disinformation articles and conspiracy theories were published, which were spread on social networks or in chain e-mails.
