JAKARTA – Chechnya is a special autonomous region in the southwest Russia or rather located on the northern side of the Greater Caucasus Mountains.

The region is bordered by the republic of Dagestan to the east and southeast, and Georgia to the west.

Currently, Chechnya is known as a region that fully supports the government of Russian President Vlaidmir Putin. In fact, when the Kremlin launched an invasion of Ukraine, the region also sent troops to help Russia.

In addition, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov is also known as a loyalist of Vladimir Putin.

In fact, Chechnya and Russia had once been in conflict. Quoted from DW, circa 1944 Soviet leader Josef Stalin accused the Chechens of helping Germany during World War II.

Stalin finally exiled the citizens of Chechnya. Cruelly, the Stalin regime also killed about a third of the Chechen population on its way to Kazakhstan.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Russian Federation was in bad shape. President-elect Boris Yeltsin worked hard to quell nationalistic aspirations among his people.

However, in late 1991, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and several other regions declared their independence. In this case, Chechnya did something similar.

Chechen militants led by a former Soviet air force general; Dzokhar Dudayev, staged a coup against the government allied with the Soviet Union. After that, he was elected leader of Chechnya. However, Boris Yeltsin refused.
