Goalkeeper André Onana takes the blame for Ajax’s defeat against Liverpool in the group stage of the Champions League. Due to a blunder by the Cameroon international, the team from Amsterdam lost 1-0 to Anfield on Tuesday.
“I don’t know what happened. I made a mistake,” Onana admitted afterwards. “I don’t have much to say about it. It’s my fault and I’m responsible for it. We didn’t win today and I’m taking the blame for it.”
Onana thought in the 58th minute that Neco Williams’ curving cross would go over the back line and made no attempt to catch the ball. To his horror, he saw Curtis Jones entering the winning 1-0 at the far post.
Ajax had several opportunities to score and saw David Neres hit the post before Jones’ 1-0. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was close to the equalizer in the final phase, but his header was a prey for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Schuurs: ‘It rarely happens Onana’
Defender Perr Schuurs did not want to blame Onana. “This happens to everyone, including our fantastic goalkeeper. It rarely happens to him. It is a shame that it happened to him today.”
“Of course we come here for the three points”, continued Schuurs, who received a yellow card just before half time. “We created enough opportunities and earned at least one point. I am disappointed.”
Due to the defeat against Liverpool, Ajax has to beat Atalanta in the last group match on Wednesday to reach the knockout phase of the Champions League. Due to Tuesday’s draw against FC Midtjylland (1-1), the Serie A club will enter the all-deciding match in the Johan Cruijff ArenA with a lead of one point.
Stand in group D:
- 1. Liverpool 5-12 (9-2)
- 2. Atalanta 5-8 (9-8)
- 3. Ajax 5-7 (7-6)
- 4. FC Midtjylland 5-1 (3-12)
