McDonald’s for more than 25 years has carried out various actions to help minimize the carbon footprint. Part of this is that the cardboard it uses is recycled and used to make various products such as kraft paper bags, egg cartons, etc. Thanks to this initiative, the company has managed to recycle approximately 600 tons of cardboard in the Mesoamerica region (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua).

In addition, it has managed to recycle more than 60,000 gallons of oil to convert it into biodiesel. This is equivalent to contaminating no more than 2 million gallons of water. In addition, McCafé napkins, drink holders, paper bags, and sundae and cold drink cups come from recycled sources.

garbage sorting

McDonald’s is implementing garbage sorting bins in various restaurants. These are labeled for easy recycling of paper, plastic, and organic waste. Chip boxes, hamburger boxes, stand-up boxes, Happy Meals, and hot drink cups can be deposited in the paper trash cans. In the plastic ones, breakfast tray, glasses for cold drinks, sundae glasses, cutlery and lids for glasses and bottles. Finally, only food waste should be disposed of in organic waste dumps.

As additional initiatives to take care of the planet, 100% of McDonald’s restaurants in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras use renewable energy, which is equivalent to planting 420,000 trees. It contributes to the reduction of plastic, by not using 70 million straws in 4 years, which represents traveling 1 and a half times around the moon and is equivalent to 65 tons of plastic.

The cardboard packages are FSC certified, which guarantees that they come from renewable sources, as well as the Rainforest-certified coffee, which means that farmers are helped to improve their living conditions and take care of natural resources. In addition, his 100th restaurant in the country features wind turbines, solar panels and electric chargers.

For McDonald’s it is important to continue carrying out small actions that generate big changes, which is why it will continue to implement programs that benefit everyone and the planet.
