On TV today: One of “the 20 most boring films of all time”, but it’s still damn great – Kino News

The British didn’t just get it wrong when it came to Brexit: 2,000 of them voted on the most boring films of all time – and also named “Noah” with Russell Crowe, which will be shown on RTL 2 this evening from 10.50 p.m.

In 2017, electronics manufacturer Samsung made a 68-minute YouTube film that showed little more than a washing machine doing laundry. The publication was accompanied by a survey of 2,000 Brits about the most boring films in cinema history. “Noah” by “The Wrestler” director Darren Aronofsky landed in 18th place alongside works like “Rendezvous with Joe Black” and “The Tree Of Life” (both with Brad Pitt).

Today, November 8th, 2024, the star-studded deluge epic with Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Anthony Hopkins will be shown on RTL II from 10:50 p.m. – and all we can say is: We found the film back in 2014, when it was released in German cinemas, pretty great…

» The detailed FILMSTARTS review of “Noah”

After Cain kills his brother Abel out of jealousy, sin takes over the earth. Only God’s chosen Noah (Russell Crowe), who sees a huge flood coming in his dreams, can now ensure that earthly life is not completely wiped out. So he and his family build a huge ark so that humanity can have a second chance…

However, Darren Aronofsky (“Requiem For A Dream”, “Black Swan”) does not stage the well-known story as a classic Bible film in the tradition of “The Ten Commandments”, instead the pre-flood part of the film turns out to be enriched with surreal elements Mix of “Mad Max 3” and “The Lord of the Rings”, while “Noah” develops into an intense psychological drama after the water drains away.

More relevant than ever

„Noah“ takes the well-known story from the Bible further, which may not suit some strict Christians. How, for example, does Noah cope with the burden of only being allowed to save his family while the rest of humanity dies miserably? Especially against the background of the corona pandemic, which has not yet been fully addressed and the distribution of the initially still scarce corona vaccine being discussed, it is not just a purely theoretical or theological question…

Nevertheless, in the end, the focus is on the directorial brilliance and the pure visual power of “Noah” – and this is our conclusion: A visionary director dedicates himself to the biblical Noah figure and shapes the material in his very own way into an intense cinematic film. Experience with a lot of emotion and spectacular images.

The 20 most boring films of all time

By the way, “Noah” is by no means the only film that makes us wonder what it is doing in a list like this. In addition to obvious nonsense like “Batman & Robin,” there are a whole series of films in the top 20 that are generally considered timeless classics rather than torturous bores:
