On Thursday, he will reveal a permanent reminder of the tragedy in Ostrava. It weighs about six tons

More than a fortnight’s advance, a memorial to the victims of last year’s shooting from 10 December was transported and installed in front of the Ostrava University Hospital. For now, it is shrouded in a tarp, solemnly – if the word is appropriate – will be unveiled tomorrow, Thursday, December 10, 2020, the anniversary of the tragedy in which seven people died and several others were injured.

The memorial is located near the place before the entrance to the polyclinic, where people immediately after the tragedy began to spontaneously wear candles and other objects.

The appearance of the monument has emerged from the architectural competition of the city, the design of the artist Lukáš Dvorský was finally marked as the winner. The casting he designed, weighing about six hundred kilograms, consists of five parts that were welded into a single unit.

The sides of the memorial are provided with sheet metal parts. The casting was covered with a black patina and the text Memorial to the Victims of the Attack on December 10, 2019 was milled on it.

It was made in the Ještěd bronze foundry near Liberec and can evoke a kind of black hole in people, into which seven human souls were forcibly drawn.

Its author Lukáš Dvorský is very satisfied with the final form and casting of the monument. “I estimate that a maximum of five foundries in the Czech Republic would be able to carry out work of this quality. This shape places the highest demands on surface quality and accuracy. In fact, every unevenness and deficiency will manifest itself on such a large smooth surface. These can be created by poor quality casting or inappropriate grinding, “praises the quality of Lukáš Dvorský.

“Very critical places are especially individual welds, where tension arises. So this is the most demanding work, which requires really masterful skills, “added the author of the memorial, the realization of which cost almost 1.8 million crowns. Hospitals, the region and the city shared the costs equally.

How do you remember last year’s horrific act at the University Hospital Ostrava?

Ivo Vondrák.Source: Deník / Lukáš KaboňIvo Vondrák, Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region:
“I still remember the shock when I learned of this tragedy in a phone call. I remember the helplessness that the news of needlessly lost lives caused me. I was just preparing for a trip to Rychnov nad Kněžnou, where the Council of the Association of Regions was to discuss a very important topic for our region in financing regional road repairs. Without hesitation, I canceled my business trip and immediately went to the hospital, I considered it my duty to be present in person at the rapid intervention. “

“I learned about the shooting in the FNO in the morning, almost simultaneously from the director of the MSK fire brigade, General Vlček, and the regional director of the Police, General Kužel. The initial information was very vague. It was on Tuesday when the city council meets regularly. After evaluating the situation, I handed over the management of the meeting to the deputy deputy and went to the venue, where I spent practically the whole day until late at night and took part in coordinating the measures. Of course, the tragedy significantly affected my program not only on this day. “

“We came to work that day around seven o’clock and about twenty minutes after seven o’clock they called me from the Polyclinic that they were shooting there. At first, of course, I didn’t believe it. At that very moment, the head of surgery was at my meeting. We both got up quickly and went to the Polyclinic. When we got there, the police wouldn’t let us in. First, it was necessary to act immediately, launch a contingency plan, provide people with psychological help, and take care of patients and staff. Then it was necessary to restore the normal operation of the hospital as soon as possible. “

Over time, the ideas become more coherent. The police now have information on the whole act, what apparently preceded it and what happened next. However, when I return to the day or morning in question, I know that in the first few seconds, given the information I received from the operations center, I tried to remember if I had forgotten about an exercise, for example. At the same time, however, I reacted immediately, went to the scene and took command.

TO THE TOPIC

The “survivors” received injuries after the victims and injuries during the shooting
Practically immediately after the tragic event of December 10, 2019, a huge wave of solidarity broke out across the country, which was to try to alleviate at least a slight alleviation of the suffering of the victims of the shooting and the survivors. Immediately after the necessary procedures, a collection account was established, on which more than eight million crowns from almost six thousand individuals, associations, organizations and companies were accumulated by the end of March. The Moravian-Silesian Region and the City of Ostrava also contributed one hundred thousand crowns for the surviving victims and fifty thousand crowns for the injured. The state also contributed, and the Prison Service, whose members were two deceased, also organized its own collection.
