On this day in history, we saw one of the greatest FIFA World Cup victories ever. On July 8th, 2014, Brazil was humiliated on home soil. For the Brazilians, this was their worst moment in football. For Germany, this was just one step closer to the ultimate prize.
Germany defeated the Brazilians 7-1 at the Estádio Mineirão, and the match was later coined as the Agony of Mineirão. Everyone expected this to be a close match between two of the greatest football nations. At the time, Brazil had 5 World Cup titles with Germany in the rear with 3.
What ensued was absolute chaos. The Germans made the first strike in the 11th minute from Thomas Müller. By the 30th minute, the game was over. The team was already up 5-0 with an irreversible lead. Incredibly emotional scenes followed in the Estádio Mineirão for the rest of the match.
The only bit of relief Brazil was given was a consolation goal from Oscar in the 90th minute, to make it 7-1. The Brazilians left the pitch head-down in tears with a chorus of boos from the devastated home crowd.
Many Bayern Munich players and alumni were involved in this trashing, including Manuel Neuer, Phillip Lahm, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos and more. Not to mention, Hansi Flick was assisting Joachim Löw on the German bench. Toni Kroos was named the man of the match and recorded the fastest brace in World Cup history, after scoring twice in 69 seconds. As you could imagine, there were plenty of other records broken as well.
With all the recent trials and tribulations for the German national team, it is nice to look back at this game. These ones don’t come around often. A true Joachim Löw masterclass.
