On this day in 1987, six women went to the first protest against the gassing of Ruse – 2024-09-28 13:59:00

On September 28, 1987, the first protest was organized in front of the building of the Party House in Ruse against the inaction of the then Bulgarian politicians. For years, the Danube city has been gassed by the plant for chlorine and chlorine products in Giurgiu, Romania, but for foreign policy reasons the leadership of the BKP does not take decisive action to protect the population, writes InfoSpravka.

On September 23, a ceremony is scheduled for the tying of the red ribbons of the Ruse pioneers, which takes place despite the repeatedly increased chlorine emissions in the air. The inaction of the authorities causes six women, employees of “Parkstroy-Ruse”, to protest in front of the building of the local party house. At the demonstration, only the question of the cleanliness of the air in the city was raised, avoiding any demands of a political nature. Thanks to this first protest, the information blackout on the fate of Ruse has been lifted, and the city’s residents are preparing for new actions.

The climax was the demonstration of mothers with prams on February 10, 1988, when 2,000 people gathered in the central city square. The actions of the Ruse public soon attracted the attention of the rest of the country, which led to the creation of the first dissident organization in socialist Bulgaria – the Public Committee for Environmental Protection of Ruse.
