The summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia begin on June 27. Numerous people are still on vacation in their home country, so it should be full on German motorways. At least on the first holiday weekend, NRW vacationers can still expect fewer traffic jams along known travel routes, at least outside their home state. NRW is the only federal state to begin summer holidays at the end of June. In early July there will also be holidays in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein, followed by Berlin, Brandenburg and Hamburg (7 July).

“Home and camping holidays have been popular for years. This is clearly evident on the main roads, “says Roman Suthold, traffic expert at ADAC. Even car trips to neighboring countries are again possible without problems thanks to the abolition of the corona restrictions. According to a survey by the Bavarian Center for the tourism in collaboration with the market research institute GfK (April 2022), almost 60 percent of summer vacationers want to use the car for trips to Germany. For destinations in other European countries, 47% indicated the car as a preferred means of travel.
–
However, ADAC in NRW is not expecting chaos at the start of the holiday season. “In view of the new increase in air travel, the car is becoming less important for travel than in the last two years of Corona. And not everyone leaves in the first few weeks. Tourist traffic is distributed throughout the entire summer vacation.” , explains Suthold.

ADAC sees the highest risk of traffic jams on NRW highways during summer holidays on Fridays from 2pm to 8pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm, particularly on northbound and coastal routes of the Baltic Sea, the Netherlands and on the way to the south. Motorists must expect delays, especially in the greater Cologne area and the entire Ruhr area. In particular, the sections of the construction site have a greater potential for congestion. When the weather is nice, last-minute hikers or vacationers can cause numerous traffic jams. It will take a lot of patience on the access roads to the mountains and lakes.

“Basically, if you are flexible, you should leave Monday to Thursday outside rush hour or use Sunday as your arrival day. If it has to be Friday or Saturday, it is worth starting early in the morning or in the evening, “advises ADAC specialist Suthold.

According to the ADAC, last year during the summer holidays in NRW a total of 30,357 reports of traffic jams for a total length of 35,494 kilometers and a duration of 16,472 hours.
