By winning in Brest this Saturday (1-0), Strasbourg temporarily regained 5th place and maintained its European hopes.
Racing Club de Strasbourg can still believe in Europe thanks to its victory on the wire this Saturday in Brest (1-0) on behalf of the 36th day of Ligue 1. It’s a small feat achieved against the Brestois, who remained on 3 rank wins. Especially since the Bretons have already beaten Monaco, Lille, Marseille and recently Lyon this season in Ligue 1. Julien Stéphan’s men, who snatched a 3-3 draw last week at La Meinau against the Parisian French champions, stumbled on the Brest defense for a long time but, once again, Kevin Gameiro found the fault in the 72nd minute of play.
With this short success, Strasbourg, who will receive Clermont next week before move to Marseille on the 38th and last day, find a place in Europe (5th with 60 points), overtaking Nice (6th) on goal difference and leaving Lyon and Lens (7th and 8th respectively) 5 pointbefore the matches of this Sunday and Wednesday.
A success signed Kevin Gameiro?
Paced and disputed, the match remained for a long time balance, with a crossbar everywhere in the first period. Little by little, Strasbourg gained the upper hand, thanks in particular to Kevin Gameiro, very active both in disrupting the Brest back lines and in his defensive returns. And the Strasbourg center-forward ended up to be rewarded : launched in depth by Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, he saw Bizot repel his first shot but took advantage of the rebound and a missed tackle from Christophe Hérelle to open the brand (0-1, 72nd). The Brestois however believed to equalize 3 minutes later but the goal was canceled after the intervention of the VAR. A first away win since February for the people of Strasbourg, despite a completely overhauled defensive line because of the absences of Djiku and Guilbert, suspended, and Lucas Perrin, sick.
???? FINISHED ! Our Strasbourgers fought hard to win this precious victory!
