Both Southern Europe, China and USA has recently been hit by powerful heat waves, and extreme heat has in several places been linked to global warming.

It has so far been on about 1,1 grader. But the temperature is set to rise further, in line with the ever-increasing global emissions of greenhouse gases.

Catastrophic increase

– If you look at what politicians are currently doing, we are heading towards 3 degree warming, says the German climate researcher Mojib Latif to Mediengruppe Bayern.

Such a sharp rise in temperature would be catastrophic, he states.

The world community has set a goal to stop global warming of 1.5 or 2 degrees. But so far, emissions are not being cut in line with these ambitions.

– We are approaching the point where we must acknowledge that time has run out, says Latif.

Previously, the expert group Climate Action Tracker It is estimated that the warming by 2100 could be between 1.8 and 2.9 degrees – depending on how many promises of emission cuts are actually kept.

Germany: – The climate crisis is the world’s biggest security problem

Latif spoke ahead of a climate summit in Berlin that began on Monday. Here, the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock acknowledged that the Ukraine war has led to a setback for climate efforts.

– We’re all in the same boat. This means that we can only reverse the development together, said the Foreign Minister.

She described the climate crisis as “the biggest security problem for all people on earth”.

In response to the Ukraine war, EU countries have decided to reduce their extensive imports of Russian energy. At the same time, Russia has reduced gas supplies to both Germany and a number of other EU countries.
