Today, Thursday, the Turkish Emergency and Disaster Management Department announced that an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale had occurred in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Turkish Emergency and Disaster Management Department stated that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.57 km.
Earlier, the Turkish seismologist, Haluk Aydogan, warned that the North Marmara Fault, which runs through the Sea of Marmara, has the potential to cause a violent earthquake of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale that will affect the entire Marmara and 7 other provinces.
Erdogan said that 50 regions around the Sea of Marmara, especially Istanbul, are threatened by the earthquake, noting that the rate of impact on the region reached 50 percent between 2016 and 2030, which is very high.
And Erdogan continued, “As far as Istanbul is exposed to the danger of an earthquake, it is in the same situation in Tekirdag, in Canakkale, in Balikesir, on the shores of Bursa, in Yalova, in Kocaeli. So, we are talking about Marmaray. There is a possibility of a strong earthquake.
Emphasizing that the Sea of Marmara and its surroundings are an area that has not been far from earthquakes for centuries, Aydogan said: “The North Marmara Fault, which runs through the Sea of Marmara, has the potential to cause an earthquake that will affect the entire Marmara.
