The “Vom Main to the Zenn” cycle path was recently opened. Our editor has tried the new route in the Kitzingen district and reports on his experiences.
The sun is low, the apple trees to the left and right provide some shade. Cyclists cavort on the wide land consolidation path, which is part of the new cycle path from the Main to the Zenn, i.e. from Kitzingen to Fürth. Some stop, pick an apple or enjoy the last rays of late summer sun that come through the trees. Almost 100 kilometers are now designated and signposted as a new cycle path route between Kitzingen and Fürth.
Good signage of the way
Rainer Wolf, department head of TG Velo, has traveled to Neustadt / Aisch and finds the new connection successful. “Especially from Scheinfeld, through Ehegrund to Neustadt, it is really very nice to drive,” says Wolf. He gives special praise for the signage. The only point that has caused a bit of confusion has now been repaired by the Neustadt / Aisch-Bad Windsheim district.

The route starts at Kitzinger Bleichwasen. “We moved the start near the city center,” explains Simone Göbel from regional management. The planners did not want to withhold the view of the Kitzingen cityscape and the former state horticultural show grounds from the cyclists. From there the route leads along the Main and then through the Sickertal to Mainbernheim, where there is not only a charging station for e-bikes, but also a hostel for cyclists. In addition, Mainbernheim offers the possibility of a city tour through the historic city center.
Lots of attractions along the route

The Iphofen route passes just a few kilometers further. One of the well-known highlights of the city is the Knauf Museum with its historical collection of reliefs. If you want to take a short bathing break, you can do so in the terrace swimming pool in Markt Einersheim during the summer season. The church castle museum in Mönchsondheim also brushes your way, and after the route has crossed Hellmitzheim, you quickly reach the Neustadt / Aisch-Bad Windsheim district.
There the route passes Scheinfeld with its historic old town, the monastery and Schwarzenberg Castle on the way to Neustadt. Signposts guide cyclists over the hills of the Frankenhöhe Nature Park to Langenzenn and finally to the urban area of Fürth.

Joint project of three districts

“The initiative for the cycle path came from the Neustadt / Aisch-Bad Windsheim district,” reports Göbel. The idea of the “Vom Main bis zur Zenn” link is to merge existing cycle routes such as “Main zur Aisch 1”, “Main zur Zenn” and “Zenntalradweg”. “The old cycle paths are much shorter and come from a different time when people used to cycle less,” explains Göbel.
The new cycle path has been adapted to today’s conditions with e-bikes, for example due to the existing charging stations and a length that can be easily managed with motor assistance. In addition, the planners of the joint project of the three districts of Kitzingen, Neustadt / Aisch-Bad Windsheim and Fürth have moved the route away from Bundesstraße 8 to quieter streets or land consolidation routes. There is only a few kilometers of gravel or gravel, such as between Markt Einersheim and Mönchsondheim.

From the Main to the Zenn in the Kitzingen district
Our editor drove the 20 kilometers from Kitzingen to Hellmitzheim on a racing bike and describes his impressions in a field report:
Another quick selfie with the two passengers, straighten your helmet and off you go along the Main through the state horticultural show area past the outdoor pool. A route map is saved on my mobile phone and I have the rough route over Mainbernheim, Iphofen, Markt Einersheim, Mönchsondheim and Hellmitzheim in my head. Already at Bleichwasen you can see the blue-green logo of the cycle path from Main to Zenn, which we will follow from now on. At every major intersection, the logo shows the way and so the group gets to Mainbernheim very quickly. The cobblestones force us to slow down and we enjoy the beautiful old town.
–One of the most beautiful sections of the route there is between Iphofen and Markt Einersheim with a view of the vineyards. Along the Alte Reichsstraße, past the apple trees, it goes to Markt Einersheim. A short time later, however, the tour ends for one of my colleagues because his chain breaks just before we turn into the most uncomfortable part. Between Markt Einersheim and Mönchsondheim, the cycle path leads over a gravel path with rather coarse stones and some nasty potholes. Far from ideal for our thin tires. Older cyclists quickly overtake us on their e-mountain bikes. –
At a reduced speed we torture our way to Mönchsondheim. On this section, I recommend road cyclists to ride on the road. Meanwhile, another advantage of the new cycle path is revealed. Because of the many train stations along the route, it is well integrated into the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN). So if you only dare to walk halfway or, as we did halfway, have a damaged bike, you have to walk to the next train station, but at least you are not completely lost.
