On the move to the NFL

The Angels. On his way to the NFL, Amon-Ra St. Brown is sweating this morning in Apollo Park, southeast of Los Angeles. The artificial turf is damp, the 21-year-old’s shadow is still long. There were a few words of greeting, otherwise there is not much talk. Everyone knows what to do. Athletic training with sprints and resistance bands.

The viewing day called “pro day” will soon be due. Then everyone wants to be in top form for the scouts, coaches and managers of the NFL teams who are looking for the talents who could become new stars in the National Football League in the coming season. “It’s normal to be nervous,” says St. Brown.

The prognoses for the athlete who grew up in California with a German mother and an American father are good. Some experts believe that the pass recipient will even be selected by a team in the first round of the draft at the end of April and thus significantly earlier than his older brother Equanimeous, who has been playing for the Green Bay Packers for three years. So that this actually works and Amon-Ra St. Brown not only automatically receives more salary, but also more respect in his new team, his performance on Thursday night is important. Once again, many things are different than usual because of Corona, and the viewing day at the home college is the only way for the talents to make a good impression.

Good forecasts

In addition to St. Brown, there are three other budding football professionals on the field, plus three coaches and three media people. A cameraman will continue to accompany the self-confident and polite young man, who only speaks German with mother Miriam. “That’s normal for me. I’ve had cameras around since I was in high school, ”he says. “That’s the way it is. We’re all at a D1 college. ”D1 stands for Division One, the highest category in college sports in the United States.

Anyone who makes it into a team has training conditions like the professionals. And the better of a team also have potential for the NFL. This perspective has been real for St. Brown not just since his four touchdowns in a quarter for the University of Southern California last season.

The interest in Amon-Ra St. Brown is also so great because there are his two brothers Equanimeous and Osiris, who also went to one of these top universities after high school. All three have been trained by Papa John since childhood. The 22-year-old Osiris is enrolled in Stanford, the 24-year-old Equanimeous was at Notre Dame and has already made the jump to the highest level. He plays for the Packers alongside star quarterback Aaron Rodgers and last season was only the third German to score a touchdown in the NFL.

The oldest of the St. Brown brothers was selected in the sixth round in the draft and is now facing a very decisive season: “I have to put myself into it next year because it is my last year of contract,” he says. Whether it goes on with the Packers or in the NFL at all also depends on this season. And because he completely missed the second season injured, he is not as advanced and established as he would like to be. This is one of the reasons why he knows what value an early draft position would have for his brother: “Those who are selected in the first or second round have more time to play badly.”

Amon-Ra St. Brown, of course, knows his brother’s advice. Nonetheless, it’s not so much that a team picks him up early – it’s that it’s the right one. “Better to be selected in the third round and come to a good team than in the second round and to a bad team,” he says.

Huge interest

23 teams have already registered and wanted to get to know him at least over the phone or via video conference. He is not allowed to name names, he prefers not to list his favorites either, even if it is no secret that he would love to play with his brother. But then he says one sentence: “I want to have a good quarterback and a team that wins. And low taxes. ” dpa
