Iran is launching a large-scale ballistic missile attack against Israel, confirming information previously shared by both the White House and Israeli intelligence and military. This large-scale offensive, a response to Israeli escalation moves that have set the Middle East on fire, could be seen as the key transition of the so far proxy conflict between Tehran and Tel Aviv into a regular regional war between the two main forces of the region. The fierce attack that started a short while ago, it was already known that it will provoke a correspondingly strong response from Israel, as both the USA and the government of Benjamin Netanyahu had warned.
Iran, in contrast to the attack that was carried out in April in response to the assassination by Israel of Revolutionary Guards officers in the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, appears to be carried out exclusively with ballistic missiles without the use of drones and cruise missiles. This effectively means that the time to prepare and protect the targeted sites is reduced to just 12 minutes, which is how long it takes Iranian ballistic missiles to travel from Iran to Israeli soil.
As for the targets of the attack, although nothing has been officially announced so far, three Israeli officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said earlier that Iran would likely target three military air bases and “an intelligence headquarters north of Tel Aviv.” ”, which he said had been evacuated.
The attack also created a huge movement in the USA, where according to reports, President Joe Biden, before the attack even took place, called an emergency meeting of the US National Security Council, in the presence of the vice president and Democratic candidate for the presidency in the November elections. According to leaks, the meeting discussed the action the US is expected to take to respond to the Iranian (counter)attack, as they had warned they would do. What is striking is that the official announcement from the White House about the meeting was made after the attack began.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced that they had fired dozens of missiles at Israel and warned that if Israel retaliated, Tehran’s response would be “more overwhelming and devastating.”
Iran’s Fars news agency reports that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the ongoing missile attack on Israel was in response to the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah last week, as well as Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh earlier this year. “In response to the martyrdom of Ismail Haniya, Hassan Nasrallah and (IRGC guard commander) Nilforosan, we targeted the heart of the occupied territories,” the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement.
Shortly before 9:00 p.m., Iran declared an end to the attack, with Israeli residents beginning to emerge from their shelters. The Israeli military released a map showing the scale of Iran’s attack, claiming Iran’s target is 10 million Israeli civilians.
