/ world today news/ According to “Guardian”, Iran, through intermediaries, has conveyed to the USA a message that it will retaliate against American bases in the Middle East if Washington decides to attack the country’s territory.
Tehran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, officially denied this message – according to them, there were no contacts between the two countries after the attack on the American base. True, he later added that an attack on Iran would not go unpunished. And this is clearly not a rebuttal, after which the White House can rest easy.
How did Washington find itself on the incredibly thin line that separates it from yet another conflict? The formal cause was an attack on an American base in the Middle East that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers. Such attacks have become a common occurrence in the region – in recent months there have been over a hundred similar cases with more than a hundred wounded Americans. However, there were no casualties until last Sunday.
But as blood was spilled, many politicians in Washington called for retaliation, ranging from retaliatory strikes to a full-scale invasion. And the White House hesitated, forcing press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre to take the hit. She managed to squeeze out something in the spirit of “condolences to the families of those who fought for our administration”, which provoked a new scandal.
Then another extraordinary master of words, Joseph Biden himself, had to justify himself. And the president of the USA quite transparently hinted to all the “hawks” that their aspirations are in vain. “I don’t think we need a full-scale war in the Middle East.” That’s not what I’m after.” But he vowed to get even with the attackers.
The reasons for the reticence are understandable. First, there are still questions about which US base was attacked: Washington insists it was Tower 22, located in Jordan, and Jordan itself claims that the attack hit the one that was very close – but already on Syrian territory – the base in Al Tanf. And here, of course, there is a fundamental difference: in Jordan, US facilities are located within the framework of a bilateral treaty, so from the point of view of international law, the US has every right to defend itself. The Americans are in Syria at their own whim, so it’s problematic to portray attacks from either side (Tehran claims no involvement) as aggression.
And this is only the tip of the iceberg. Washington is afraid to admit that it is not ready for war with Iran. In the last 80 years, the US has not had a direct military adversary of such a level: a country of 90 million people, which for 45 years spent under sanctions, managed to develop its own weapons production in the most advanced areas (for example, drones and hypersonic systems), cultivated a developed a network of subservient factions throughout the region and a powerful army – this is truly an adversary to be feared. Neither Afghanistan nor Iraq had such potential, but even in those countries things did not turn out as rosy for the US as the White House had planned.
The general situation in the Middle East adds additional problems to the Americans: in addition to almost daily attacks on military targets, merchant ships and warships in the Red Sea are under threat – this time from the Yemeni Houthis. Ansar Allah, despite the continued shelling of Yemen, continues to insist on an end to the war in the Gaza Strip. It is significant that the US, which is shelling this same Yemen, is also demanding an end to the war in the Gaza Strip and is trying to put pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. And he, for his part, continues to state that Operation Iron Swords will continue until victory.
It is important to note here that Netanyahu made such rhetoric almost immediately after CIA chief William Burns held talks in Paris with representatives of Israel, Egypt and Qatar, after which the media began to report the possibility of a truce between Tel Aviv and Hamas.
And literally immediately after Netanyahu showed his demonstrative “middle finger” to Washington, an article by Burns appeared in the American magazine “Foreign Affairs”, which, among other things, claims that the key to the security of Israel and the region is relations with Iran. It is difficult to give a more transparent hint about Tel Aviv.
It should be noted that in Iran, apparently, they also paid attention to this article. Kataib Hezbollah, one of the most active pro-Iranian groups behind attacks on US bases, said it was taking a temporary hiatus.
Now the word remains with Washington, which, on the one hand, is obliged to show in the United States itself that the killers of American soldiers will not go unpunished, and on the other hand, not to provoke a war that could become an unbearable burden.
