We’re moving to daylight saving time

On Sunday we will sleep an hour less. Bulgaria switches to summer time tonight. The hands move forward one hour at exactly three in the morning on March 26.

According to European plans, 2021 was supposed to be the last year in which the weather changes. Again, it is not certain that it will be the last time, although the European Parliament voted in 2019 to abandon time changes altogether.

Countries that chose to stick to daylight saving time were to stop the process in March 2021, while those preferring the winter time schedule would make the final change in October, when we generally return to astronomical time.

Daylight saving time is a system introduced to save on lighting costs by increasing the use of daylight. With it, the official time is usually shifted one hour ahead of the astronomical time, remaining so for the spring and summer months. This is aimed at ensuring a better match between daylight hours and active hours for work and school.

In the EU, the transition to summer time is regulated by Directive 2000/84/EG, which defines the beginning and end of the period for all EU countries. This directive is reviewed and extended every five years. It is observed by other European countries that are not part of the EU.

The idea of daylight savings time was first put into practice by the German government during World War I in the period 30 April to 1 October 1916. Soon after, Britain followed suit, initially implementing daylight saving time from 21 May to 1 October 1916

Daylight saving time was introduced in Bulgaria on April 1, 1979.
