On Sunday 10,635 new corona infections and 18 deaths

The current corona wave in Austria is flattening out, both in terms of case numbers and hospital patients. On Sunday, 10,635 new infections were registered – albeit with fewer test numbers – the lowest Sunday value since the beginning of the year. 18 other fatalities were reported. For the first time in eleven weeks there are fewer than 200,000 laboratory-confirmed actively infected people, for the first time in almost a month there are fewer than 200 intensive care patients.

Most recently, on January 9th, there were 10,291 new infections, fewer than today. The 10,635 cases now reported are below the average of the past seven days, which fell to 14,290. The seven-day incidence on Sunday was 1,113.9 cases per 100,000 people. There were now 192,043 laboratory-confirmed active cases across Austria, 10,769 fewer than on Saturday. There were similarly few demonstrably infected people in Austria on January 22nd, when 197,088 active cases were registered.

The trend in the hospitals affected also continues to be positive. On Sunday there were a total of 2,495 Covid 19 patients in the hospitals, 33 fewer than on Saturday. 191 seriously ill people have to be cared for in intensive care units, 17 fewer than the day before. Since last Sunday there has been a decrease of 33 patients. Most recently, on March 14, 192 less than 200 intensive care patients were treated.

The number of Covid deaths is still very high in Austria. 18 deaths have been registered since Saturday, last week there were a total of 241 victims. In total, the Covid 19 pandemic has claimed 16,226 lives in Austria since it broke out. 180.7 people per 100,000 inhabitants have already died from or with Covid-19.

A total of 170,534 PCR and antigen rapid tests were registered in the past 24 hours. Of these, 156,488 were meaningful PCR tests, the positive rate was 6.8 percent and is above the weekly average, with an average of 4.8 percent of the tests delivering positive results.

Since the beginning of the pandemic there have already been 3,987,385 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases in Austria. 3,779,116 people are considered recovered. The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is currently Lower Austria with 1,375.3, followed by Vienna with 1,354.1, Burgenland with 1,271.1 and Vorarlberg with 1,233.5. It is followed by Upper Austria (1,080.4), Styria (863.7), Carinthia (855.9), Salzburg (853.2) and Tyrol (660.6).

The corona vaccination helps against a severe course. Austria-wide 1,989 vaccinations were carried out on Saturday, of which only 92 were first bites. According to the data from the e-vaccination card, a total of 6,818,357 people have already received at least one vaccination. Exactly 6,181,474 people and thus 68.8 percent of Austrians have a valid vaccination. 18,893 certificates expired in the past week.

The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is highest in Burgenland at 75.1 percent. In Lower Austria, 71 percent of the population has a valid vaccination protection, in Styria 69.5 percent. After Vienna (67.9), Tyrol (66.8), Carinthia (65.7), Salzburg (65.1) and Vorarlberg (64.8), Upper Austria brings up the rear, as always, with 64.5 percent.
