On holiday to the Mediterranean? Then you better not wait too long with booking

For example, not all hotels in destinations that are popular with Belgians (such as France, Spain, Greece and Turkey) have reopened (yet) and the number of seats in the planes flying there may be limited. After all, the tourism sector is cautious after two years of heavy losses. Airlines do not invest in scheduled flights if they do not have good hopes that they will also be profitable.

There could be real capacity problems, for example for trips to the Mediterranean. In France, Spain and Italy more domestic tourism is expected than in the past: people who go on holiday in their own country. This can mean that hotels will fill up faster and that there is not even enough supply. Or at the very least that there are higher prices.

car rental

The same goes for car rental. There is also expected to be a shortage there. Companies have often had to sell cars due to the crisis and are now finding it difficult to purchase new ones due to the shortage of parts. It is mainly the smaller – cheaper – cars of which there are few. Customers will therefore be driven to the larger and more expensive models.

TUI Belgium sees that in mid-January the Belgian has abandoned his wait-and-see attitude of the past two years for the coming summer holiday and is planning again for the longer term. We currently have more bookings every day than in the same period in 2019, before the pandemic.

According to the professional association of travel agencies, it is best to book as soon as possible for destinations such as the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. Not much will be possible in Asia, because many countries there have not yet reopened after the corona pandemic. And the same goes for Tunisia.

Turkey and Egypt

The reverse is true for Turkey and Egypt. Tour operator Corendon expects that there will be just more capacity there, especially due to the war in Ukraine. After all, these are destinations that are traditionally popular with Russians and Ukrainians.
