The average hospital still treats 3 corona patients, but that is not evenly distributed across the country. Several hospitals have been able to close their corona wings.
There are now 216 corona patients in the nursing wards. That is 18 less than on Thursday. The number of patients in intensive care fell by 11 to 147. With both figures, the Netherlands is back at the level of the end of September, at the start of the second wave.
Room for other treatments
The more corona patients leave hospitals, the more room there will be for people with other conditions. There are now 599 so-called non-Covid patients in intensive care units, 28 more than on Thursday. These are, for example, people who have undergone an operation because of cancer or serious heart problems, or who have been the victim of a serious accident.
About a month ago, intensive care units treated more corona patients than non-Covid patients. That has since completely turned around, there are now 452 more non-corona patients on ICUs. That’s the biggest difference since October 1, nearly nine months ago.
Lowest number since October
Fewer and fewer corona patients need to be hospitalized. In the past 24 hours, only 11 people ended up in a nursing ward or intensive care unit because of corona. That’s the lowest number since October, when the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS) began sharing that data. Last Friday, 36 corona patients were admitted, the Friday before 59 and another Friday before 77.
These are the last hospital figures for this week. Due to the low number of patients admitted, the LCPS will only provide updates on weekdays. So the next numbers will come on Monday.
Infections
For the fourth day in a row, about 700 people have tested positive for the corona virus. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) received 659 reports of new cases between Thursday morning and Friday morning.
The figure shows how fast the number of infections is falling. On Fridays and Saturdays, most cases are usually discovered within a week. Last Friday, RIVM reported almost 900 positive tests, the Friday before almost 1400 and another Friday before almost 2400.
4725 positive tests have been registered in the past seven days. This means that the Netherlands is back to the level of early September, almost ten months ago. That was at the beginning of the second wave.
In both Rotterdam and Amsterdam, 46 residents tested positive. The Hague counted 24 new cases and in Vlaardingen 16 people were told that they had contracted the virus. This is followed by Breda (13) and Utrecht (11).
151 municipalities negative
Not a single resident tested positive in 151 municipalities, including places such as Almelo, Oss, Assen and Lelystad. That number is comparable to the previous days. At the beginning of this month, there were about sixty municipalities daily with no corona cases and at the top of the wave there were at most a few municipalities where no one tested positive. Furthermore, there are 79 municipalities with only one new corona case on Friday.
The number of deaths from corona rose by five. That’s the highest number in two weeks, but it doesn’t mean that all of these people died in the past day. When a patient dies from corona, it sometimes takes a while before this is processed and registered. Two of the five people who died came from Rotterdam. It also concerns residents of Venlo, Beverwijk and Cuijk.
Nearly 1.7 million people have tested positive since the outbreak began in February last year. 17,754 people are known to have died from the virus. The actual numbers are higher.
