On Archangel Stew – with respect to our dead – 2024-09-16 12:16:58

/ world today news/ On November 5 is one of the biggest stews, called Arkhangelska and Rangelova. It is always on the Saturday before the feast of the leader of the heavenly host St. Archangel Michael.

On this day, honor is paid to the memory of the deceased, eternal gratitude to the officers and soldiers who died for Bulgaria and to all those who fell in the ranks of the Bulgarian Army. On this day, a special service is performed in every Orthodox church – Liturgy for Repose and General Requiem, which is celebrated as Zadushnitsa. Archangel stew is an expression of our faith in the immortality of the soul and in the resurrection of the dead.

The Savior taught that the dead do not die in the true sense of the word, but pass at their death from earthly to eternal life. That’s why the living pay respect and recognition to the dead by making pomen – commemoration, so they are not forgotten. This is also the connection between the earthly and heavenly Church.

On Archangel Stew, as on any other commemoration, so-called distributions are made – sweets, candies, fruit, boiled chicken, wine, etc. The dead in Christ do not feel jealous of each other, therefore, in addition to the relatives, it is also given to the people around the neighboring graves, even if they are strangers. The ritual in memory of the fallen Bulgarian soldiers has been held since 1924. It was discontinued in 1946. 15 years ago – in 1992, the Ministry of Defense and the Union of War Disabled and War Victims restored the ritual.

Every year on Saturday, before the glorification that the Orthodox Church gives to the leader of the heavenly host St. Archangel Michael is made one of the three greatest memorials for the souls of our departed – Archangel Stew. On this occasion, funeral prayers for the deceased are offered in all dioceses of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
