On 17 September, Poland opened a maritime channel to the Baltic bypassing the Russian Federation

“We wanted to open this passage so that we no longer need permission from a country that is hostile to us,” said Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Elbląg in northern Poland is separated from the Baltic Sea by a thin strip of land. Poland opened a channel on Saturday that allows ships to sail from the Baltic Sea to the port of Elbląg, bypassing Russian territorial waters.

A newly dug canal runs through Poland about five kilometers west of the town of Krynica Morska.

“On the 83rd anniversary of the Soviet Union’s attack on Poland, we symbolically break the last bonds of our dependence on Russia,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

Duda stressed that Poland cannot afford to be a dependent country. According to him, the opening of the Maritime Canal is a great victory for all who understand the word sovereignty.
