(ANSA) – TRIESTE, MARCH 29 – The ceremony for the awarding of the honoris causa master’s degree in Law to the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and to the former president of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor. This was announced by the University of Trieste. The rector Roberto Di Lenarda announced the award in December during the inauguration ceremony of the academic year. Di Lenarda had underlined the role played by the University as a “bridge between East and West, hinge and dialogue between civilizations and healing of scars that history has left on our peoples. This path of reconciliation, historically tiring, will culminate in the year of centenary of the university, with the awarding of an honorary degree” to Mattarella and Pahor. In July 2020, on the occasion of the return of the Narodni dom to the Slovenian community, the two presidents met in Trieste and shook hands in front of the Basovizza foiba as a sign of reconciliation.
