The Department of Health urged the Estonian population to be careful and reminded that it is important to have a booster vaccination and to wear a facial fee indoors.
“The situation in both Estonia and the rest of the world is changing rapidly. Preliminary information suggests that the number of people infected with omicron may rise sharply in just a few days, and we are seeing a similar trend in Estonia. Preliminary data suggest that the omicron strain is at least three times more contagious than the delta strain and that it is more prevalent than the delta strain in people who have previously been infected with Covid-19.
“In countries where the omicron is spreading rapidly, hospitalizations have started to increase. A clear causal link between the severe course of the disease and the omicron infection cannot yet be established, and most people hospitalized have not been vaccinated,” Herma said.
The Estonian Department of Health is continuing to analyze the situation, but it is not yet possible to determine whether omicron infection means a milder illness for all people. The current information does not suggest that omicron is less likely to cause illness in non-vaccinated people than in other types of Covid-19.
The Department of Health recommends that everyone be vaccinated or given a booster vaccine. People who have not yet been vaccinated should start the vaccination course as soon as possible, as a new wave of the disease is expected, the department warned.
It has already been reported that a further 386 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus in Estonia in the last 24 days, and four deaths due to Covid-19 have been reported. The 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population, estimated by the Estonian Department of Health, has risen to 543.1.
The total number of confirmed infections in Estonia has reached 232,506.
A total of 1,888 people died in Estonia with Covid-19.
