OMT member: ‘We could have prevented a dip in test capacity’

Vossen is a member of the Outbreak Management Team and responded to the criticism she received earlier about the test policy in the Netherlands. In the program Sunday with Lubach Vossen’s role was discussed in relation to the lack of testing capacity.

Lubach suggested that her own influence at the smaller test labs contributed to the fact that capacity was not optimal.

People who want to do a corona test now sometimes have to wait a long time or travel far. The results of the test often take longer than the promised 48 hours. According to Vossen, this ‘test dip’ of the past few weeks could have been prevented if the OMT had previously estimated that many people would have themselves tested. “We had not anticipated the enormous test demand,” she says.

Vossen does not want to say whether the Netherlands has applied the wrong test policy. “In the initial phase, we chose to focus on a very specific group with the testing. That is the policy we set at the time.”

More deaths

Eva Jinek cited the figures from Germany, where many more people are tested for corona. There, 11.2 in 100,000 people die of the virus. In the Netherlands, this is 36.6 in 100,000. The fact that the number in the Netherlands is so much higher is not necessarily the result of fewer tests, according to Vossen.

According to Vossen, the full test capacity of the Netherlands has been used so far, but the OMT was always dependent on the means and there were ‘many setbacks’.
