OMT member: “Omicron wave may disrupt society”

The omicron wave will lead to unprecedented contamination records in our country next week. So says OMT member Christian Hoebe.

Hoebe, who is also head of infectious disease control at the GGD Zuid-Limburg, thinks that in the following weeks it may lead to disruption of society. “The extreme contagiousness of the omicron variant can also lead to hospital staff becoming ill en masse, or having to be quarantined after an infection in the family. And that scenario is everywhere. Cashiers, garbage collectors and bus drivers the virus can strike anywhere and could disrupt the country to some extent.

A similar scenario is already occurring in Great Britain. In London, about 200 soldiers have been put to work in hospitals to solve the shortage of personnel. Infections and quarantine rules lead to staff shortages and put a lot of pressure on healthcare.
