OMT: forecast virus spread in autumn and winter months more unfavorable than expected

The forecasts for the development of corona in the autumn and winter months are more unfavorable than previously believed, the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) writes in a statement published today. advice. That is why it is not wise to implement further easing in the short term, says the OMT.

“There is a greater degree of uncertainty, which also does not exclude a sharp increase in hospital and ICU admissions,” the scientists write in their advice.

The OMT reports that after the last relaxation of the corona measures on September 25, the number of infections and hospital admissions increased within two weeks. That is why the advice warns against new relaxation.

The OMT will meet again on October 29, shortly before the cabinet takes a new decision on the corona measures.

The RIVM announced earlier today when the weekly figures were published ‘autumn hike’ seen in the number of corona infections. The infection rate rose by 48 percent in the past week. In one week there were 17,832 new positive tests, compared to 12,016 a week earlier.

IC patients

If the current corona measures are maintained, RIVM expects a maximum of 180 corona patients to be in the ICU in January “with an extension to a maximum of 400”. With a further relaxation of the measures and therefore an increase in contacts, this can rise to a maximum of 500 with an extension to a maximum of 800 corona patients in the ICU. There are currently 138 people in the ICU.
