This summer, Omonia Nicosia’s sports director at the time Jesper Jansson brought in former Hammarby player Akinkunmi Amoo from FCK, despite the fact that the Nigerian was convicted of rape and attempted rape as well as for violations against two other women in Denmark. The penalty was imprisonment for one year and deportation with an entry ban for six years. Furthermore, he was also sentenced to pay court costs of over 100,000 Danish kroner (over 150,000 Swedish kronor).
The 21-year-old denied any wrongdoing and has appealed. However, he did not want to answer questions when Football Channel tried to get his view on the verdict in January.
– No comments, he said then, and fled into the players’ bus after Omonia’s away match against Aris Limassol.
In Omonia it has been turbulent recently and both sports director Jansson and coach Kjetil Rekdal have been fired.
Now it is clear that Amoo has also done his part in Omonia. The club announces that the contract, which was written until 2026, is terminated early. Personal reasons are given as the reason.
“We thank the footballer for the cooperation and wish him success in his career,” the club wrote in a statement.
According to the Cypriot site match.cy, Amoo will now fly to Qatar and most likely he will continue his career there.
Amoo made a total of six appearances, all of which were substitutes, for Omonia.
