On Thursday, the new Omoda S5 GT sedan was presented in Moscow, and singer Klava Koka became the first owner of the car and part-time ambassador of the model.
The story of Chinese companies and their brand ambassadors from among domestic stars is not new; for some reason, Chinese bosses are confident that one of the Russian celebrities attracted by the company will be able to help increase product sales. But in most cases, all these attempts look at least funny, since our stars sign such contracts that in the end they do not become any kind of ambassadors, but in fact are simply the faces of advertising campaigns. Of the loudest stories of this kind, I remember the collaboration between Oppo and Yegor Creed, as well as GAC and Basta, and let’s add today’s collaboration between Omoda and Klava Koka. Let’s face it, Yegor Creed, other than the presentation and promotional photos, never held an Oppo smartphone in his hands, much less used it. Basta sat in the GAC and drove it only during the filming of a commercial, respectively, and you will never see Klava Koku driving an Omoda S5 GT on the streets of Moscow. So all these loud statements about brand ambassadors in our country from Chinese companies are just fluff and information noise.
In today’s story, there is also a very strange choice of star to represent the car. After all, the Omoda S5 GT is such a “charged” version of the sedan with bright pseudo-sporty elements, such as orange calipers, the same seat belts, contrasting stitching in the interior, a dual exhaust system and bright GT emblems on the body. The buyers of such a sporty sedan are mostly young men who dream of a BMW M5, but due to their income, they can only afford a car like the Omoda S5 GT, fortunately it is still subsidized by the manufacturer and you can take out a car loan at a normal interest rate. Girls, fans of Klava Koka and those who are interested in her work are unlikely to be interested in such a model as the S5 GT. And potential buyers of the car, Omoda’s collaboration with Klava Koka, may even scare off, because the boys from the area may not understand the purchase of such a “woman’s car.” In my opinion, to present the Omoda S5 GT in our country, it would be more reasonable to choose one of the autobloggers, from those who are watched by the target audience of this model, or, at worst, it would be possible to attract the same rap artists who interesting to potential buyers.
Okay, let’s forget about these ambassadors and look at the car itself. Despite the fact that Omoda presents us with the S5 GT as a “sporty” version of the S5, in reality it very much looks like it is a facelift of a regular sedan, they just decided to bring it to us as an additional modification, and not an updated model. Thus, the Omoda S5 GT has a new front end with a new hourglass-shaped radiator grille with intertwined threads inside, which is suspiciously reminiscent of that in Lexus cars. And the new LED narrow headlights have an L-shaped running lights pattern, which again refers us to the Japanese manufacturer. Overall, the S5 GT looks quite interesting and slightly aggressive, which certainly suits a pseudo-sports sedan.
There are more changes inside; here, in addition to orange accents, a new front panel is also used, with dual displays that are relevant for the manufacturer, 10.25-inches each with HD resolution, which are hidden in a single box. A new steering wheel has been installed with convenient controls and updated steering column switches, something we have already seen in the brand’s crossover. The central tunnel has also changed, receiving a different layout and new controls, including a low, comfortable automatic transmission lever.
In terms of equipment, the Omoda S5 GT is quite well equipped. There is support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and wireless connectivity is available for both platforms, there is wireless charging with a convenient large platform and three USB connectors, two of which are located in the front of the cabin. Driver assistants are still good, adaptive cruise control is installed, which is complemented by a tracking and lane keeping system, there is a blind spot monitoring system, as well as an all-round visibility system and parking sensors front and rear. There are also emergency braking systems that can help in some cases.
The Omoda S5 GT also replaced the power unit, instead of a 1.5 liter turbocharged engine with 147 horsepower, they installed a 1.6 liter turbo engine with 150 hp. And the place of the continuously variable variator was taken by a seven-speed robotic gearbox with a “wet” type dual clutch. The drive is, as before, only front-wheel drive. According to the manufacturer, the new sedan can accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, which is much better than the 9.7 seconds of the regular Omoda S5.
In addition, the color palette for the Omoda S5 GT has changed slightly; a fashionable green color has become available, as well as the current gray color. And in general, now the buyer can choose from seven available color options, while for the S5 there are only six.
The trunk of the new product is medium in size at 482 liters, like a regular sedan, and the trunk lid opens and closes manually. In the cabin you can see a small automatic hatch in the front part, which is closed by a mechanical curtain. Seating in the back is not the most comfortable due to the narrow doorway, and the upholstery of the eco-leather sofa feels like paper, and only in the back; the front seats clearly have a different, higher quality material on the seats.
The Omoda S5 GT sedan in our market is offered in two rather rich trim levels (Neo and Ultra), and they ask for 2,839,900 and 2,939,900 rubles, respectively. By taking advantage of all the manufacturer’s marketing offers, you can get a discount of 300,000 rubles. The price tag for the model, in my opinion, is quite high, because for 2,399,900 rubles you can get the top-end Changan EADOplus, which has everything the same as the Omoda S5 GT, with the exception of “sporty” design elements.
